Baby boom at Omaha zoo continues with announcement of fourth elephant pregnancy

Armstrong and Pate announced Wednesday that the zoo is expecting its fourth elephant calf next year. “This means that in the course of two years, Omaha will be the birthplace of half of the elephants born in the United States,” Pate said.

Jayei, the matriarch of the Omaha zoo’s elephant herd, is pregnant, zoo officials announced Wednesday. If all goes well, her calf will be the fourth elephant born at the zoo about 13 months from now. Lolly, another of the zoo’s elephants, is also pregnant and is due in the spring.

Eugenia and Sonny, born at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium earlier this year, are “doing everything little calves should do,” said Sarah Armstrong, the zoo’s elephant manager. They were the first two elephants to be born at the zoo.
