El Niño has officially formed in the Pacific Ocean, and is expected to grow to historic strength and intensify extreme weather events across the globe. Meteorologists at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) formally confirmed the existence of the El Niño, a warming of the Pacific Ocean near the equator. The warming is expected to exacerbate global temperatures, which are already rising due to fossil fuel pollution, and amplify severe weather events worldwide. Forecasters have predicted that the phenomenon will rival or even exceed the record-setting El Nino of 1997, which triggered several heatwaves, floods, droughts, tornados and wildfires. Clark University climate scientist Abby Frazier explained that the deep, warm waters of El Niño affect weather patterns by bringing “a lot of extra heat to the surface.” Frazier said this heat can fuel “a lot of extreme events for a lot of places around the world,” warning that “it can get dire very quickly.”
