Survey: Impulse Buys May Be Ruining Some Americans’ Finances

Long gone are the days where impulse buying meant grabbing an unplanned candy bar or magazine in the checkout line. Now, social media makes it quick and easy for us to purchase just about anything with the click of a button, whether or not it’s in the budget. And for some Americans, it’s hurting them...

Panthers pushing to grow sport in Latino communities

The Florida Panthers in recent years have pushed to grow the game of hockey in untapped communities, particularly the rapidly growing Hispanic market. There are more than 500,000 Hispanic residents in Broward County in Florida, where the Panthers' Amerant Bank Arena is located. And the Panthers, as well as the NHL, have instituted several initiatives to introduce hockey and combat barriers to entry among Hispanic and Latino fans. Florida currently has a 3-1 lead over the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, which the Panthers are competing in for the second straight year.

Analysis: NHL playoffs off to odd start, from the net out

The greatest goal-scorer of this generation was held without a point for the first time in a series in his nearly two-decade NHL career. The best goaltender in the league this season has given up a first round-high 19 goals. One team has lost a Vezina Trophy finalist, used three different guys in net and taken a 3-1 series lead anyway. And another won a game putting just 13 shots on net thanks to the goalie everyone thought was the problem making 33 saves. The start of the Stanley Cup playoffs has been anything but predictable.

Salt Lake City experience coming-of-age moment

It may look like an NHL team has just fallen into Salt Lake City's lap. But local organizers say the Arizona Coyotes' relocation to Utah is the product of a yearslong effort to beckon professional hockey and other elite sports to the capital city. The move marks a coming-of-age moment for Salt Lake City as a pro sports hub in the Mountain West. It gives the midsize market its second major professional sports franchise and a chance to prove that it can sustain multiple pro teams year-round. Hockey fans outside of Utah are not yet convinced the city can support its new team.

Stanley Cup Playoff features many veterans to root for

Every year the NHL playoffs features a handful of players up in age and nearing the end of their careers who have never hoisted the Stanley Cup. This spring features two on the Dallas Stars in forward Joe Pavelski and defenseman Ryan Suter. Colorado's Zach Parise, Toronto's Mark Giordano and Carolina's Brent Burns are among the others. Pavelski and Burns were longtime teammates with San Jose and reached the 2016 final under now Stars coach Peter DeBoer before losing to Pittsburgh. Parise captained New Jersey to the 2012 final before losing to Los Angeles.

NHL trade deadline shows those who made most of opportunity

Golden Knights acquire Hertl as trade deadline arrives

Two fragile DC neighborhoods hang in the balance as Wizards, Capitals consider leaving

The proposed move of the Capitals and Wizards sports teams to nearby Virginia has stoked concern in a pair of fragile Washington neighborhoods. Residents and business owners in Chinatown fear that the departure of the teams would devastate the neighborhood around the Capital One Arena — which is already struggling with rising crime.
