Wisconsin men's basketball fans upset over upset by Nebraska

  • Aaron Ferguson

The Badgers blew a big lead, and had the court stormed against them. Here's what fans were saying after the game.

What's in the corn over there?

2022: loss at Nebraska with an outright Big 10 title on the line
2023: loss at Nebraska after leading by 17
2024: loss at Nebraska after leading by 19
We have a big time Nebraska problem.

— Cory Erickson (@CoryErickson32) February 2, 2024

Complacency kicked in

A great first half with AJ Storr hitting 3’s and a 16 pt. lead, where Wisconsin may have played their best 20 minutes, turned into their worst 2nd half performance of the season and Nebraska upsets the Badgers in an ugly loss that hopefully won’t last into Sunday’s Purdue game.

— Jeff Ostach☮️ (@jeff_ostach) February 2, 2024

Were they awful or just didn't play to their identity?

Gard refused to call timeout until 20-3 run. Didn’t play any bench last 9 mins. Needed a spark and not one second for Connor in 2nd half. Crawl and Wahl with awful games. Not much confidence going into Sunday showdown now

— ChazB (@chazb33) February 2, 2024

Right

Why did they abandon post touches?!

— CDubs27 (@Cdubs_27) February 2, 2024

A lot of fans were skeptical

Some things are so predictable. As soon as you believe in a Wisconsin team they will lose. Called it earlier this week.

— Chris Davis (@cdavis20000) February 2, 2024

Big time

All time embarrassing

— Robb M (@robbm02) February 2, 2024

Good thing it's Feb. 1

Tonight is exactly why a Greg Gard lead team will never do anything in March. Never.

— ParBirdieBirdie (@ParBirdieBirdie) February 2, 2024

They have been pretty great

These replies are just ridiculous and shows how quickly people can turn on their team. Yeah that blown lead was bad, this is the big ten against a team that doesnt lose at home. We will be just alright and havent had a team like this in years, let’s appreciate it

— Michael Ballard (@mballard_22) February 2, 2024

Couldn't have been the poor shooting or turnovers. Nope.

We aren't allowed to criticize the officials, but that's why they lost. 3 phantom fouls in a row on Bucky is when momentum completely shifted. And that trend continues from these zebras for the rest of the game.

If you watched the entire game, you know.

— Chad (@___Chad__) February 2, 2024

Rational thoughts

Mixed reaction… those refs seemed one sided but I don’t think that was the reason for the loss. How many turnovers? 14? 15? Nebraska was playing tough D, hit shots and pulling down rebounds. Side note, throw the ball off the guys foot and stop wasting early timeouts.

— Craig Culbertson (@CjcCraig) February 2, 2024

Experienced at blowing leads at Nebraska

Tired and sloppy play in second half. Crowl and Wahl did not contribute at all on the offensive end. Once the inevitable Nebraska run (helped by one-sided calls) began, our composure went right out the window. I’d expect more from such an experienced team.

— Russ Evansen (@waunaruss) February 2, 2024

Turned out OK for that 2013-14 team

Nothing new in Lincoln.Tough place to play no matter what year. 2014 or 15 Badgers got beat too. But the energy the Badgers had in first half didn’t come back in 2nd half. But a great game for a neutral fan as multiple runs within

— mike kerry (@BadgerMike) February 2, 2024

The Hoibergs did their parts

These are the games over the years that have brought Gard criticism. They made no adjustments defensively in the second half. Props to hoiberg for giving putting his players in positions to make plays. Carter Gilmore should be out of the rotation.

— JLC (@caspert1013) February 2, 2024

Tough plane ride home

A historic, hideous loss. The Badgers had been 120-0 since 2000 when leading by 15+ at halftime. Film watch will be absolutely brutal.

— Bill Pfeiffer (@billt209) February 2, 2024

We'll see ... e+r-o

Just like clockwork. Get ranked in the top 10, then blow a huge lead to an inferior team. Next up a loss to Purdue. It happens almost every year. Get ranked too high then lose a few games in a row and back to reality.

— Bill Vogel (@BillVogel16) February 2, 2024

Sunday is critical, yes

They were out-worked from the 15-minutes left mark of the second half, and did not run offense after they got the big lead. Deserved to lose this one. The worst half of basketball they played this year. Must-win now on Sunday if they want to win the Big Ten.

— Sam Malone (@Thee_SamMalone) February 2, 2024

People probably forgot Kamari was out, but you're right

First half was completely different energy and composure than rest of game.

Really felt the absence of @KamariMcGee. He allows Chucky to play much better and always gives a good boost of energy.

— Korey 🌻 (@kek608) February 2, 2024

Hadn't seen a session like that in awhile

They have got to limit those scoreless droughts. Can’t win in March being on the receiving end of big runs

— Michael Paduano (@greenwave70) February 2, 2024

Not even half of everything, but seemed like it

UW can be up 30 in Lincoln and Nebraska would still come back. Outplayed in every facet in the 2nd half and Nebraska made absolutely everything they put up.

— ksagendo (@ksagendo) February 2, 2024

But the portal and NIL are ruining the sport ...

In the last week-Tennessee (5) lost North Carolina (3) lost Kansas (7) lost. Purdue (1) beat unranked team in ot Huston (4) won in ot to unranked team Illinois (10) lost in ot to unranked team- morale college basketball has parody and it’s hard to win let lone win on the road.

— Mike (@givemikeacookie) February 2, 2024

Offense was offensive

They simply got away in the 2nd half from what they do well- few turnovers, great defense, getting to the line. That last play in regulation by Stohr - that was a foul! No fouls for Nebraska till well into the 2nd half. Really???? Momentum is a killer.

— Mary Korn Erickson (@sixtiesfan) February 2, 2024

Is it becoming a trend?

Did the same thing against Minnesota. Too many players forcing shots, and dribbling into double teams early in the shot clock when they get a big lead. Miss McGee badly. Get the ball inside & play from there! Learn from this.

— Kirk Eastenson (@Eastyfor3) February 2, 2024

Wisconsin, too?

Nebraska is a lot better at basketball than they are at football.

— Más Tequila (@JoRy_MaMa) February 2, 2024

All over again

Deju vu. This is their pattern, get up in 1st half & then relax & go cold in the 2nd. They've been able to escape ... until tonight. Kudos to NEB for their toughness. #Badgers just don't seem to have the ability to match a highly physical team. #BadLoss

— PackerFansUnited.com (@packfansunited) February 2, 2024

Home dogs win outright

pic.twitter.com/wpFyZV2T40

— Andy Carrigan (@AndyCarriganRRS) February 2, 2024

Fair assessment

All the low percentage first half buckets gave Badgers false confidence. 2nd half Nebraska showed gutsy defense, Badgers backed off post, Crowl hesitant again, turned ball over, drew no fouls and Huskers hit their shots. Huskers second half>Badgers 1st half.

— Fred Melius MD (@fmelius) February 2, 2024

He was +4, after all

Hopefully giving tough love to essegian over everything else is worth it.

— Billy Lowry (@bilow88) February 2, 2024

Could have been. Guess we'll find out Sunday

Did they start looking ahead and watching Purdue tape at halftime? They looked completely lost in the 2nd half

— Jeff Becker (@jbecker18) February 2, 2024

Talk to you then!

We’re on to Purdue.
