US Senate Passes War Powers Resolution, Defying Trump on Iran

The US Senate has approved a war powers resolution blocking President Donald Trump from continuing military action against Iran. The Senate voted 50–48 in favour of the War Powers Resolution, with four Republicans breaking with their party to support its passage. This is the first time that both chambers of Congress have passed a resolution directing the president to halt US military action since the War Powers Act was enacted in 1973. Unlike other forms of legislation, a concurrent resolution under the War Powers Act is not sent to the White House and does not require the president’s signature While likely to remain largely symbolic, the vote represents a break from Trump, who had previously received unanimous support from Republicans in Congress In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized the vote, calling it “poorly timed and meaningless” The resolution’s passage is expected to put pressure on the president to not resume hostilities in Iran, something he has threatened to do if negotiations fall apart According to Reuters, a White House official downplayed the vote, saying it had only passed due to the absence of two republican senators: Mitch McConnell and Dave McCormick.
