Creating a fresh-smelling home isn't about filling every room with candles and air fresheners. Cleaning expert Melissa Maker says “a clean home should smell like nothing,” meaning unpleasant odors should be removed rather than masked. One of the biggest causes of bad smells is excess moisture, which can lead to musty odors and mold. Experts recommend keeping humidity below 60%, replacing kitchen sponges every one to two weeks, and making sure towels and bath mats are completely dry before putting them away. It’s also easy to become “nose blind” to everyday odors. Cleaning trash bins regularly and taking out the garbage more often can help, but don't forget to give your refrigerator some attention as well.
