Sandhill cranes take flight from sandbars along the Platte River early Saturday near Kearney. The Crane Trust at Wood River estimated 400,000 cranes on March 19, which was 49,000 fewer than the previous week. Matt Fong, director of fundraising and outreach for the trust, said the survey team has noticed the warm weather affecting the cranes' behavior. Notably on warmer days, like Saturday when the temperature peaked in the mid-90s, cranes are staying in the water in larger groups for longer periods of time. "We guess they are doing this to try and stay cool, as temperatures are much higher than average."
Sen. Ben Hansen of Blair said the "best path forward" is to include both school choice scholarships and the child care subsidies in the budget. If both provisions don't remain, Hansen said it's a real possibility that this budget debate "ultimately ends in mutual destruction."
