Protestors attend the Rally for Democracy on Oct. 6, 2026, along South Locust Street in Grand Island as President Donald Trump speaks at the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center.
A few hundred protesters gathered Monday across South Locust Street from Fonner Park in Grand Island as President Donald Trump appeared at the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center to support Republican candidates. Thousands of Trump supporters attended the event inside.
Protesters cited a range of concerns about Trump and his administration, including immigration enforcement, inflation, transgender rights, government spending and Trump’s conduct. Several traveled from communities outside Grand Island to participate in the Rally for Democracy.
April McFarling of Lincoln said high prices and difficulties finding affordable housing were among her concerns. “There are many of us that are not happy with what's going on, so I want to use my voice to show that there are a lot of us that are not happy,” she said.
Megan Sharp of Aurora said policies affecting transgender youth motivated her to attend because she has a transgender child. “I think politicians need to know that what they do affects real people and real children,” she said.
Nikki Mushaney, chair of the Hall County Democratic Party, said she was pleased with the turnout and response early in the rally. Organizers hoped to draw several hundred protesters before the event ended at 6 p.m.
