Before last year's 40th Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Reunion, organizers placed American flags at Second Avenue and 14th Street in memory of the 400 Nebraskans who died in the Vietnam War.
Retired U.S. Army veteran Chuck Ogle of Kearney, father of Holly Mead, is on the VBG committee. In Vietnam, Ogle was the pilot of 10 aircraft that were hit by enemy fire, but he suffered injuries only in the first incident.
Axtell native Steve Nelson is leading the community's push for a veterans memorial. He spoke about that project earlier this week. He's expecting concrete to be poured in just a few weeks, with completion of the memorial in 2027.
The Aug. 21-23 reunion will include a barbeque at the American Legion, golf at Buffalo Ridge Golf Course, a women's luncheon, a Saturday night banquet and a Sunday breakfast buffet.
Speakers will include Vietnam veteran Gary Davis, former Kearney Police Chief Bryan Waugh, now superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, Nick Baird, investigator for the Kearney Police Department, and Dixie Codner, a Gold Star mother.
Registration costs $50 per person. Meals and some activities are extra.
