Since 2019, the Omaha Public Power District's peak summer load has jumped by 850 megawatts, roughly the amount of power needed to serve the city of Lincoln.
OPPD's Standing Bear Lake Station began commercial operation in late 2025 as part of the utility's efforts to meet growing demand for electricity. The turbines at the plant, located at 11401 Military Road in Omaha, can run on natural gas or fuel oil when natural gas supplies are scarce.Â

All scenarios in the Omaha Public Power District's next resource plan assume that the utility will transition its North Omaha Station coal power plant from coal to natural gas. The plant is seen from across the Missouri River in Iowa on Dec. 18, 2025.
The Omaha Public Power District's first utility-scale solar array, the 81-megawatt Platteview Solar plant, is seen around its opening in 2024 south of Nebraska Highway 92 near Yutan.
