The Grand Island Public Library’s summer reading program this year included a monthly storytime in the Stolley Park Garden. Librarian Laura Fentrees got to go out with a few of her musical instruments (a ukulele and an autoharp) and sing some silly songs in between reading nature-themed picture books.
Folks from Fontenelle Forest brought an owl for one of the Grand Island Public Library’s Mega Monday programs that were part of the library’s summer reading program. They also brought a peregrine falcon and a merlin.
“One of the most fun (as well as messiest) programs was the two-part tween DIY Excavation Kit workshop,” says Librarian Laura Fentress. Kids aged 10-13 picked out small objects to embed in layers of plaster of Paris mixed with sand. The first session was dedicated to making each kit in a yogurt-tub mold. After seven days of drying time, the kids came back to excavate the resulting plaster bricks.
