Gov. Jim Pillen proposed having the state take over paying for K-12 education as part of his evolving plan to broaden sales taxes and dramatically cut property taxes in Nebraska.

Gov. Pillen's plan to cut Nebraska property taxes 60% by having the state take over school funding prompted excitement and skepticism from lawmakers. "Let's see what sticks," one senator said.

Gov. Jim Pillen's property tax plan would leave the lowest income Nebraskans to shoulder more of the state's tax burden while giving the most relief to the largest property owners, but he asserts the plan is critical to the state's future.
