More than 80 areas of study to choose from. Connections to employers. A 95% success rate for employment or continuation to further education. Add to these benefits: affordability and flexibility.
For students attending Southeast Community College, education is a win-win situation, according to Kat Kreikemeier, director of admissions.
“Students matter here. They feel valued knowing there is a team of faculty and staff truly committed to their success who support their personal journey and connect them with industry partners or assist them as they continue on to a four-year college,” she said. “This incredible family-like culture is unmatched and puts students at the heart of our service.”
As for affordability, Kreikemeier said the community college, which has campuses in Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford, offers an in-state tuition of $123 per credit hour, along with ample scholarship opportunities. In 2023, the school awarded more than $2.5 million in scholarships to students.
Other amenities include new on-campus housing, renovated student centers, a new academic support area, social spaces on all three campuses and the addition of multiple academic buildings. SCC also offers several career fairs each year, an active an active campus life coordinated by student life and housing staff, free tutoring for all students, a writing center and academic and personal support services.
“We are very flexible with students and how they interact with us,” Kreikemeier said. “Our strategy is so intentionally focused in that it allows us to meet students where they are at. For example, we have a virtual tour on our website for students who prefer that type of introduction to a campus. Students can also meet with their college advisers in person or remotely. We’ve also developed an online experience for new student enrollment that has been so successful we continue to explore ways to improve it.”
Prior to the start of their first semester, new students have the option to participate in a welcome program where they can discuss their concerns and ask questions in a private setting.
Under the guidance of a faculty or staff member, each student or family can tour the campus, complete registration and finalize other details prior to the start of the term. Students can also check in with their adviser, visit with key campus resources including financial aid, housing, tutoring and the accommodations resource office, and get one-on-one assistance from the SCC help desk to ensure they can access SCC technology platforms.
Kreikemeier said the welcome program has become a very meaningful and powerful experience not only for the students, but the staff and faculty as well.
“Enough can’t be said about our staff and faculty,” she said. “We are committed to the SCC mission and creating the best experience possible. We want to be with the students. Serving our students and helping them be successful and connecting them to careers and colleges is the central part of our mission.”
