1956 Louis Armstrong
In March 1956, jazz trumpeter Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong and his All-Stars played a concert at the Mosque, along with Woody Herman and his Third Herd. Ticket prices were $1.50, $2 and $2.50. Four days later, the Mosque was scheduled to host two shows by an emerging star, the day before his self-titled debut studio album was released. His name: Elvis Presley.
1958 Van Cliburn
Piano virtuoso Van Cliburn flew into Richmond in October 1958 for a concert at the Mosque. Although he made his home in Texas, Van Cliburn said he had traced his roots back to 17th century colonial Virginia.
1965 All American Touring Band and Chorus
In August 1965, the All American Touring Band and Chorus performed the finale at the Festival of Arts in Richmond’s Dogwood Dell. The ninth annual festival, sponsored by Federated Arts of Richmond Inc. and coordinated by the city parks department, lured about 52,000 people to 13 concerts and eight stage productions during the summer.

1971 Duke Ellington
In May 1971, Duke Ellington appeared at City Stadium as part of an event headlined by Bob Hope and sponsored by Nolde’s Bread. Ellington wore the cowboy hat to shade him from the sun. The event attracted a crowd of about 10,000. (Tickets cost $2 plus four blue Nolde bags, or $4 and buyers received coupons redeemable for four bags of Nolde bread.)
1971 Maybelle Carter
In December 1971, “Mother” Maybelle Carter (from left) performed at the Richmond Coliseum with daughters Anita and Helen as part of a Johnny Cash concert (he was married to Carter sister June). Maybelle played autoharp, banjo and guitar, and her two-finger picking became a signature style. The famous musical family was from Southwest Virginia but lived in Richmond for several years in the 1940s.
1972 Jefferson Airplane
In August 1972, hundreds of people lined up at the Thalhimers department store in downtown Richmond to buy tickets for a Jefferson Airplane concert at William and Mary Hall in Williamsburg. It was billed as the first time the rock band performed in Virginia.

1974 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
In August 1974, Foreman Field at Old Dominion University in Norfolk was packed with about 33,000 music fans for a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert. The popular band had split in 1970 but reunited for a summer tour in 1974 that hit large arenas and outdoor stadiums. The “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan adorned the front of the stage, and the concert opened with the Stephen Stills-penned hit “Love the One You’re With.”
1975 Pat Benatar
In May 1975, Pat Benatar – before she became a world-famous rock vocalist – delivered her final performance with the band Coxon’s Army at Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. Benatar moved to Richmond two years earlier at age 20; she met pianist Phil Coxon during a gig at the Roaring Twenties, and what started as a duo evolved into a larger band. In leaving Richmond, Benatar planned to try her vocal luck in New York.

In June 1976, Elvis Presley performed for a full house at the Richmond Coliseum. This was the singer’s last concert in the city before his death in August of the next year.

1983 Ramones
In July 1983, the legendary Ramones performed at the Much More Club on West Broad Street (which is now the Broadberry music venue). The American punk rock band entertained an audience of about 450 people. The opening act was the Violent Femmes, a prominent folk punk band.
1983 Sonny Rollins
In April 1983, legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins performed a sold-out solo show to close Virginia Commonwealth University’s Jazz Festival IV in Richmond. In true form, the master of improvisation turned what could have been one-hour set at the VCU Performing Arts Center into a two-hour concert.
1984 Ricky Skaggs
In March 1984, country and bluegrass musician Ricky Skaggs performed for a crowd of more than 3,000 at the Mosque in Richmond; his set list included seven No. 1 singles from the previous two years. Skaggs is an accomplished mandolin player and also plays guitar and fiddle. His career included work with the Country Gentlemen, a bluegrass group from Northern Virginia.
1988 Def Leppard and Tesla
Concertgoers are checked by security guards before entering the Coliseum for a Def Leppard and Tesla concert on Jan. 18, 1988. The venue decided to beef up security after a 16-year-old girl died from an alcohol overdose at an Aerosmith concert on Nov. 15.
1988 Festival Park
On July 4, 1988, Festival Park in downtown Richmond hosted a country music concert featuring Exile and Juice Newton, among others. The free event closed with a laser show in which patriotic images were projected onto a screen suspended over the audience.

1988 Van Halen
In October 1988, Eddie Van Halen of the rock band Van Halen performed a 15-minute guitar solo to a concert audience of almost 10,000 at the Richmond Coliseum.
1989 Chuck Berry
In January 1989, rock ’n’ roll pioneer Chuck Berry played a sold-out show at the Mosque (now Altria Theater) in Richmond. Among those in attendance was Gov. Gerald L. Baliles, to whom Berry dedicated “Rock and Roll Music.” Tickets to the show cost $19.50.
1994 Frank Sinatra
In early March 1994, Frank Sinatra played two sold out concerts at The Mosque. Toward the end of the second show, he passed out, and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. He never returned to play in Richmond again before his death. This photo is from one of his last concerts in Richmond.

His concert in Richmond featured his best-known songs such as If You Could Read My Mind, Early Mornig' Rain, Don Quixote, Sundown, Song for a Winter's NIght and his blockbuster hit, Wreck of the Edmund Fitxgerald. His 4-piece back up band still features bass player Rick Haynes, who has been with Lightfoot since the 1970's.
